Mark your calendars and get your popcorn bins ready because Disney has just announced a slew of new films along with their official release dates running all the way through 2020. From Star Wars to Marvel and Pixar and beyond, we can expect the next few years to be filled with heroes, villains, princesses, and archaeologists.
First up on the big announcements is the one that most of you have probably been waiting for: Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin Trevorrow will be directing the final installment in the new trilogy and, as of now, it’s set to hit the big screen on May 24, 2019. If that date feels a bit too far, far away then you can kill the time by watching The Last Jedi set to open this December 15 and the upcoming Han Solo movie coming to theaters May 25, 2018.
The next big film name on the newly released list is Jon Favreau’s live action remake of the beloved ’90s classic The Lion King. Despite the fact that fans are still majorly on the fence with this remake, it looks like it is full speed ahead for the release date of July 19, 2019. But hakuna matata! We’ve got James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa and Donald Glover will be voicing Simba. This remake is set to film with the same technology used to create the storybook feel in The Jungle Book.
The year of 2019 will come to an end with the movie that everyone loves and yet is sick of hearing about at the same time: Frozen 2. The original film was released in 2012 and since then the world has not been able to let it go and move on to newer and better movies. A sequel has been in the works since 2015 and, while we don’t know much about the story line just yet, the Academy Award winning directors are on board along with the star studded cast. Frozen 2 will be arriving in theaters just in time for the holidays on November 27, 2019.
Probably the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) of these announcements was a confirmation that a fifth installment to the Indiana Jones franchise is indeed happening, and the new release date is slated for July 10, 2020. George Lucas has been working on a script since 2012 and back in 2015 it was rumored that Chris Pratt would take up Dr. Jones’s whip and signature cap, but that same year it was confirmed that Jones would not be recast, so we can be rest assured that Harrison Ford will continue on as our favorite archaeologist. Here’s hoping that the fifth film will be a bit better than the fourth installment that came out in 2008 and was less than stellar.
Of course, these aren’t the only movies that we’re excited to see here at the Geekiverse. Here are some other dates you might want to mark off on your calendar:
