He called me an acquaintance. I said good enough for $12.
Let’s get this out of the way. I love wrestling. I simply do. I had my love, hate, love scenario like most people. It’s called growing up. However, now that I’m paste the hate stage, and fully in the love stage again, I am now finding unique ways to enjoy it again. So what happened when Brunner 1.0 took his talents to Buffalo, and watched Dan Joseph debut for Nickel City Wrestling.
Here’s the thing. I have no idea how good Dan is as a wrestler. He’s jacked. He’s charismatic. And he is one of the funniest people I’ve had to interact with. The dude is humble too. But I’ve only seen his one wrestling match on Youtube from 2-3 years prior. Honestly, it was a typical match from an independent promotion. It was just okay. Not knocking the guy. He had only been doing it for about 2 years at that point.
Jeffrey Pavlak and I got the chance to talk to Dan while he visited Buffalo:
After that, I truly never found his matches on Youtube. I never took the time to stalk the dude other than Facebook (yeah, we’re friends now. It’s a bromance). And then I saw this…
A weekend show in Buffalo, and Dan Joseph is wrestling! Why not? Am I right? I’ve never to any independent wrestling show. Raw, Smackdown, and WWE Fastlane is about all I’ve been able to afford and commit to time wise. So, I set my schedule up to be able to do this, and made it happen.
Honestly, the dude was the best wrestler there that night. And I’m not just saying it because I know him, or to diminish the other talent. You could tell he knew what he was doing, and his moves were crisp compared to the others. I was even surprised to see a move, I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. He jumped over the top rope, slide behind a guy hanging on to the rope, and german suplexed him! I’ve seen variations, but not that move specifically (off the top of the dome.
After the match I got to see Dan after he sat with his family (which is also awesome that he had such support for a tiny Indy promotion) and he got knocked pretty good in the eye. “That’s Wrestling.”
That is wrestling. And the dude gets it. He may never get to the “big leagues” of ROH, NJPW, TNA, or WWE. But he’s the current MPW World Champion after wrestling for 4 years. And that’s pretty cool.
