The Geekiverse Sims The World Cup of Hockey – NHL 17

Who will reign supreme in the World Cup of Hockey?

I sat down with NHL 17 to run through a session of one of the brand new game modes, the World Cup of Hockey. It’s exciting that this tournament is back in real life, and even more so that NHL 17 brought the authentic teams, jerseys, and atmosphere to the table in their sim. I decided to take on the role of Team North America and run through the tourney myself.

I am happy to report that Team NA won it all, undefeated. On paper, this is one stacked group, full of number 1 and 2 overall draft picks, award winners, and as a whole, the future of the NHL. This is how I set up my lines. How could I possibly pass on the chance to put Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, and Auston Matthews on the same line?

There were a few notable games along the way. In the semi-final, I faced off with Canada, who is as stacked as any team in recent history. Their in-game offense is ranked 100/100. They have Carey Price in net. Preds’ defenseman PK Subban didn’t make the cut. The winner of the game would go on to a best 2 out of 3 final for the championship. We went to overtime, where Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin netted the winner (seen below). It was crazy and awesome.

In the finals, I faced off against Sweden. Game 1 went back and forth, as the lead changed frequently. Sweden ended up scoring with 57 seconds left to take the lead, 5-4. With 2.7 seconds left, Connor McDavid sniped a shot glove-side, top right corner to bring the game to OT. Sabres forward Jack Eichel scored the winner. In game 2 , things didn’t get nearly as excited, as Team NA won 3-1.

In the real life tournament, I thought Team NA had a good chance at winning it all. They went 2-1 before ultimately not making the finals. Canada faces off against Team Europe in Toronto tonight for the championship.

Check out these sick goals from my tournament:
