A Baker’s Dozen! Well, not quite.
Happy Star Wars Day! It is May the 4th, 2016 and what better way to celebrate than watching Star Wars movies and reading up on A Galaxy Far Far Away…
In the theater on December 17, at the premiere of Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens, Jeff Pawlak & I wrote down 20 questions we wanted answered in the movie. Here’s how we fared:
1.Who is Kylo Ren?
Ben Solo, aka Master of the Knights of Ren. Ben is the child of Han Solo & Leia Organa, born approximately one year after Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Sadly, he succumbed to the Dark Side of the Force and betrayed his uncle, Luke Skywalker.
2. Who is Rey’s family?
Unanswered. Unfortunately, we don’t find out who Rey’s parents are – though hints seem to run rampant. Is she Luke’s daughter? Han’s? Here’s to betting we don’t find out until Episode IX.
3. Where is Luke?
We didn’t have to wait long to get this answer! The opening crawl tells us pretty quickly that Luke is missing. Furthermore, Han explains later in the movie that he’s in hiding and that no one is sure of his whereabouts.
4. Do Han & Chewie make it?
Ugh. This one hurts. The trailers led many to believe that Chewbacca had gotten hurt or died, but Han ends up being the martyr. Dying at the hands of his own son, Kylo Ren, Han dies a hero’s death, fulfilling Harrison Ford’s nearly 3 decade-old wish.
5. Does a major character die?
See previous question.
6. Who is Supreme Leader Snoke?
This is answered, but not in the way we were hoping for. There’s a great deal of mystery surrounding Supreme Leader Snoke’s origins. Perhaps he is just a brand new character, but that seems too easy. There are many theories out there, but the prevailing one is that Snoke is actually Darth Plagueis the Wise. Seriously, listen to each of their musical scores. Eerily similar. Trevor aka Brunner 2.0 & Adam speculate on Walking Carpet and give their predictions here.
7. Will Lando or any other familiar characters appear in cameo?
No Billy Dee Williams aka Lando Calrissian, but we do see Admiral Ackbar and Nien Nunb!
8. Who is featured in the final Lightsaber matchup?
Pawlak predicted it would be Finn & Kylo Ren, and he was correct. I said otherwise. Regardless, Daisy Ridley’s Rey plays a prominent role as well. See where it ranks on The Geekiverse’s list of every major Star Wars duel.
9. Why does Finn have Anakin’s/Luke’s Lightsaber?
Maz Kanata gives it to him at her castle, after trying to give it to Rey. We’re betting it’s going to stick with Rey for a while, now that she is in a major stare-down with Luke Skywalker. I have a theory on why it made its way to him.
10. Why is Rey in despair?
In the final trailer for TFA, I predicted Rey was crying frantically over Chewbacca’s body. I’m so glad I was wrong! It was Finn, after the duel between her and Kylo Ren. Finn will be in Episode VIII, so we know he will make some sort of recovery from his wounds taken from Ren.
11. Is Finn a Storm Trooper from birth or is he under cover?
I made the correct prediction here – Finn defects from the First Order fairly early in the movie. Quite the switch from the last time we saw our heroes in Storm Trooper gear.
12. Why is Poe held captive by Kylo Ren?
Poe is captured early in TFA, having just met with Lor San Tekka regarding the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker. Ren burns down a village of innocent people on Jakku, but spares Poe and brings him aboard his Star Destroyer.
13. Does Darth Vader have anything to do with this film?
Well, yes and no. Directly, no, we do not see Vader other than his shriveled, burned mask. Indirectly, Vader is the inspiration for his grandson, Kylo Ren. It’s really cool to see that our new dominant antagonist is in the bloodine of Vader, Luke, Han, and Leia.
14. Will we see any new Force powers?
Fantastic question by Pav! Yes – two. First, Kylo Ren can stop a laser blast with his mind, while simultaneously interrogating a prisoner. His natural Force power his nearly unparalleled in Star Wars history. Second, Ren can infiltrate minds, not just influence them. He pulls secrets from Poe’s mind. Seeing that memories can be pulled from a mind, this makes me believe that someone such as Luke can plant memories.
15. Will we see a flashback sequence for the first time in a Star Wars film?
Though Anakin had premonitions in Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, we have not seen any flashbacks. Until now. Rey has a flashback to her youth when she touches the Lightsaber of Anakin & Luke Skywalker.
16. Are Han & Leia together and if not, why?
Sadly, not anymore, though their love still seems to have a flame! The novel explains more, including the fact that they were married.
17. Do any previous trilogy characters have kids?
Yes, Han & Leia. But maybe also Luke? We have also been told that we will discover Finn’s origins at some point, likely in Episode VIII. Whether his ties run to past Star Wars characters remains to be seen.
18. Does Finn lose his right hand?
No. Odd question, you may think. Two reasons for my thought: 1. The Lughtsaber’s two previous owners, Anakin & Luke, both lost their hands in duels. I thought it only fitting. 2. John Boyega (Finn) wore a glove over his right hand to the premiere. Nice tease!
19. What’s the new musical score that we’ll all remember?
“The Scavenger,” by John Williams. This is Rey’s theme, and it gives me chills every time. Kylo Ren’s is a win also. Who am I kidding? All of Williams’ work is brilliant.
20. Who is Maz Kanata referring to during her “eyes” dialogue?
This sequence was only in the trailer and not in the film’s final cut, so we don’t get an answer. I had assumed Rey, because that’s who was emphasized in said trailer. She does call out Finn’s eyes in the film, but I believe this was intended for Rey. No answer to this one.
