It’s the biggest party of the summer, and the best group of wrestling fanatics the Geekiverse could assemble picked the matches one-by-one. If you’re not down with that, we’ve just got two words for ya! We’re Sorry.
The 2017 installment of Summerslam has SO MANY random storylines. To call the current card uninteresting is simply not possible, so for that, we give the WWE credit. Realistically, I don’t think anyone has a real idea what will happen. And that makes this year so exciting compared to some years past. Listen to the Top 5 Summerslams here.
Let’s meet the contestants.
Brunner 1.0 is the reigning, defending, undisputed Geekiverse wrestling champion. It all started with WWE 2k on Xbox, and since then he’s covered wrestling, proving he’s been the best since day one.
Jeff Pawlak is the pierogi eatin’, Polish livin’, pizza dishin’, soccer jersey wearin’ son of a gun! He thrives watching the independents compared to WWE, but we think he can hang his own for the biggest party of the summer.
Harrison Beeby simply will not die! While you preach your Psalms, and your John 3:16, Beeby 3:16 says I just whipped you in picking Summerslam! A two-time guest on Geeks Talk Wrestling, Beeby has become a seasoned vet in-between the ropes for the podcast.
Kyle Wilson is the franchise player, the beast incarnate who will leave the Geekiverse forever if he doesn’t win the title. Wilson is ready to take on the legends, and hit some prime-time picks out of nowhere!
Spencer Wheelock is the best in the world at what he does, do you understand the words that are coming out of his mouth… YOU STUPID IDIOT. Locked Wheels is locked and loaded with his picks, and is ready to make any non-believers go to sleep who disagree.
Tyler Damron is the cream of the crop of this year’s panel, and he’s ready to rise to the top! Nothing means nothing! Cards stacked against the Hollowfront bassist, and let him say it: He is the cream! And there is no doubt about it! OOO YEAHHH! FREAK OUT!
Scott Werner is the best in the world. He’s been the best since he walked on this panel. Picks, podcasts, sick guitar riffs with Amoura, nobody can tough him! He’s taking his Summerslam pick championship, and he’s leaving the Geekiverse forever!
Troy Licastro is Captain Charisma, and ready to shout his picks out to all his peeps! If he doesn’t win, he’s likely going to strike a 5-second pose. You think you know him, but he will quickly make this Rated R and spear you through the a wall. We don’t know what’s going on in this picture either…
There’s our panel of “experts,” now let’s see what we predicted.
Fatal 4-Way for the Universal Championship
The big storyline here is what Brock Lesnar’s future with WWE entails. With the UFC possibly back into the picture (thanks Jon Jones), we may see the strap come off the Beast. If that’s the case, one of the other three contenders would become a Universal Champion for the first time. Here’s the panel’s judgement.
3 for Samoa Joe. 3 for Roman Reigns. 1 for Braun Strowman. And one for Brock to retain. Well then.
Jinder Mahal beat Randy Orton 3 times after taking the championship from him. Nakamura has not lost in singles competition since being called up to Smackdown Live! Now with the Baron Corbin threat out of the picture, we should get some sort of a decision in this match. In theory…
It appears the panel is ready for the Jinder Mahal experiment to be done with. 6 for Nakamura, and only 2 for Jinder. Truthfully, would any of us be shocked if they kept the Jinder train rollin, rollin, rollin? Nope.
United States Championship
This one is truly interesting. AJ and Owens have already traded the title back and forth once after AJ won the title shockingly at a live event at Madison Square Garden. Then Owens won it back in rather confusing fashion. Now we’ve added Shane McMahon as the guest referee…
In rather convincing fashion, the panel selects AJ to retain. Brunner 1.0 and Pav think KO is ready to reclaim the title, and once again become the Canadian Face of America.
Smackdown Live! Tag Team Championship
Somehow, this is being put on the pre-show according to WWE.com. Truly a shame considering how well these two teams performed at Battleground. They stole the show in Philadelphia! That being said, the outcome appears to be rather predictable to our panel.
NEW. DAY ROCKS. NEW. DAY ROCKS. Even Pav agreed!
RAW Tag Team Championship
This one could go a number of ways. Sheamus and Cesaro have been riding high since beating the Hardy Boyz for the titles. Ambrose and Rollins have barely co-existed in recent weeks, yet look to be back on track as Shield Brothers once again. Is the Shield making a return rather soon?
7 out of 8 predict Ambrose/Rollins capture the belts at Summerslam. Just to throw this out there and really stir the pot: Pav, Troy, and Beeby also picked Roman Reigns to win the Universal Championship. I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’.
Smackdown Live! Women’s Championship
Naomi has not really faced a challenge since Wrestlemania. Natalya hasn’t looked like legitimate contender for the strap in years. And there’s Ms. Money in the Bank Carmella looming. This one could get interesting…
Only Locked Wheels took Natalya. Beeby and Damron think a Carmella cash-in will happen successfully. It wouldn’t be the first time someone cashed in at Summerslam to claim the championship.
RAW Women’s Championship
We’ve seen this before at Great Balls of Fire. That ended in a count-out. One would have to expect we get an actual decision here… Right? RIGHT?!
6 of 8 see this one going in favor of Bliss. Brunner 1.0 and Wilson see Sasha capturing that Brooklyn magic and getting her 4th title reign.
Akira Tozawa shocked the audience on the go-home RAW, shocking Neville. The king of the cruiserweights held the title since Royal Rumble. Can he reclaim what made him so dominant?
Majority had Tozawa continuing his reign, although 3 think Neville will once again sit atop his throne. This one is virtually a toss-up for the kickoff show.
John Cena vs. Baron Corbin
Before the go-home Smackdown Live! this was simply John Cena trying to show mean-mug Baron Corbin respect. Now? Baron Corbin lost his chance at the WWE Championship because of Cena.
And only Pav thinks Baron Corbin will get the victory. It’s hard to imagine Big Match John continuing his losing ways at Summerslam. However, it does feel like Corbin has lost a lot lately. 7-1. The panel has decided.
Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt
Demon Finn Balor is back! The only two matches he’s had on the main roster? Summerslam. After Bray Wyatt beat him on the go-home RAW, does the panel think he can continue his winning ways?
Nope. Everyone thinks Finn Balor goes 2-0 at Summerslam.
Randy Orton vs. Rusev
Randy Orton lost to Jinder Mahal 3 straight times for the WWE Championship. Rusev lost to John Cena in a flag on a pole match. So let’s see how the do at Summerslam facing one another… apparently.
This one is close. 5 Geeks think Randy Orton hits the RKO out of nowhere and gets the W. 3 Geeks think Rusev finally goes back to his winning ways and crushes Orton.
Big Show vs. Big Cass w/Enzo in a sharkcage
Enzo Amore will be above the ring in a sharkcage as two giants slug it out. Of course this is happening.
Brunner 1.0 was tempted to pick Enzo and just turn whole match on it’s head. However, 6 of 8 picked Big Cass to get a big win at Summerslam.
Hardy Boyz & Jason Jordan vs. Miztourage
A late addition to the card, we’ve got another kickoff show match that should get the crowd excited if nothing else. That being said… The Hardy Boyz and the Intercontinental Champion are on the pre-show. Oy.
Only Brunner and Beeby see the heels taking this one. A lot of Hardy Boyz love in this kick-off. Frankly, who dislikes the Hardyz at this point in their careers?
- The panel predicted we will have a new WWE and Universal Champion. Last year the first ever Universal Champion was crowned, and Dean Ambrose defended his WWE title against Dolph Ziggler. You forgot about that match didn’t you?
- 3 of 8 have the group formerly known as The Shield taking home RAW gold.
- 2 “guarantees” from the panel: ‘Demon’ Finn Balor and the New Day.
- The women’s championships are truly up in the air. Either with the potential for a cash-in attempt, or Sasha reclaiming her Brooklyn magic.
- The only complete “toss-up” is Randy Orton versus Rusev.
