Cate Blanchett in Talks to Join The House With a Clock in its Walls

Exciting news for all of you John Bellairs fans out there.

Variety reported Wednesday that Cate Blanchett is in talks to join the big screen adaptation of Bellairs’ 1973 gothic children’s masterpiece The House with a Clock in its Walls.

For the uninitiated, The House with a Clock in its Walls tells the story of the orphaned Lewis Barnavelt, a 10-year-old boy sent to live with his uncle Jonathan in a mysterious mansion. Little does Lewis know that Jonathan is a secret warlock, and that the previous owners of the house – a pair of evil sorcerers – have hidden a clock designed to bring about the end of the world within its walls.

Originally published in 1973, The House with a Clock in its Walls proved to be a major hit for Bellairs, who went on to write 15 more M.R. James-inspired books for young fantasy and horror lovers before his death in 1991. Three additional novels were finished by author Brad Strickland.

There is no release date set for the film, but Jack Black has already signed on to play Jonathan. Eli Roth is directing, and Eric Kripke is writing the script. According to The Hollywood Reporter, if Blanchett inks a deal, she’ll be cast in the role of Mrs. Zimmerman, Jonathan’s best friend and fellow witch.
