Coming off of the box office success of Beauty and the Beast and the recent cast announcements for Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin, we now have some casting news for The Lion King! Check it out after the break!
Despite the fact that Jon Favreau’s remake of the Disney classic, The Lion King, doesn’t hit theaters until 2019, we’ve managed to already have a slew of names signed on to the cast (more so than the Mulan remake coming out next November… but I digress…)
Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is known for his iconic and Oscar nominated performance as Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave, Mordo in 2016’s Doctor Strange, and (going back old school) The Operative in Serenity, is now reportedly in talks to portray one of the most vile villains in Disney history: Scar.
The Lion King will be completely computer animated similar to Favreau’s remake of The Jungle Book that came out in 2016.
Ejiofor isn’t the only big name attached to this newest remake coming from Disney. Donald Glover will be voicing Simba, Seth Rogen is Pumbaa, Billy Eichner is Timon, John Oliver will be playing Zazu, and (my favorite) James Earl Jones will be reprising his role of Mufasa.
How do you feel about this Disney remake? Is The Lion King too perfect to touch? Or are you looking forward to it? Let’s get debating in the comments!
Amanda Woomer-Limpert is one of the Geekiverse’s newest writers and a former Disney cast member. While she doesn’t think The Lion King should be touched, she is super pumped about JEJ coming back as Mufasa.
