BOOKS: 8 Hot Sci-fi and Fantasy Releases For the Hot Days of August

As summer winds down, there’s still time to get a few good reads in before the hot days and nights turn to the cool breezes of fall. This month’s releases include ghosts, Firefly, and a love affair with Death.
After On: A Novel of Silicon Valley
by Rob Reid (August 1)
This one involves an incredibly addictive social network named Phluttr. That name alone was enough to get this book on my list. Phluttr is a superintelligence that takes in every single fact of her hordes of users, in this near future story that is as hilarious as it is chilling.

Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H. Wilson (August 1)
This one sounds kind of cool with a race of human-like machines living among us for centuries. This book has some some historical elements to it, starting in Russia in 1725, and coming forward to present day. Historical science fiction involving 300 year old robots? Worth a look, I think. Daniel H. Wilson is the best-selling author of Robopocalyse.

Noumenon by Marina J. Lostetter (August 1)
It’s 2088 (not really all that far away) and humanity is ready to explore outside of our solar system. Reggie Straifer, and astrophysicist, has found a star that doesn’t follow the laws of physics. So, 9 ships head out on a mission that will take generations. Humans don’t live generations, so they send clones, and order to preserve the talents of the original crew, they keep cloning themselves over and over again. This epic is told in a series of vignettes over time.

American Ghost by Paul Guernsey (August 8)
Thumb Rivera is a small-time pot grower and a biker, and he’s also dead and destined to haunt his survivors while he works to solve his own murder with the help of a unemployed ghost hunter and a journalist turned pig farmer. This sounds like a fun one, huh?

Serenity: No Power in the Verse written by Chris Roberson and Joss Whedon, Illustrated by Georges Jeanty, Karl Strong, and Dan dos Santos (August 8)
While not an entirely new work, this book collects the entire 6 issue run and an additional Serenity issue from Free Comicbook Day and puts it all under one cover. This takes place after the Serenity movie, and Mal and his crew get word that a friend is in Alliance custody, so they head to the Outer Rim to help out. The creative team on this hails from the original Firefly/Serenity, iZombie, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

New Voices of Fantasy edited by Peter S. Beagle (August 22)
Each month I add a collection of short form fiction. This is August’s collection. An anthology of fantasy shorts by 19 of the genre’s up and coming stars including Usman T. Malik, Sofia Samatar, Eugene Fischer, E. Lily Yu, Ben Loory, Maria Dahvana Headley, Ursula Vernon, Max Gladstone and more. The stories were selected and edited by award-winning novelist Peter S. Beagle of The Last Unicorn fame. This collection showcases authors that are defining the fantasy genre today.

You can pre-order New Voices of Fantasy until August 22.

Reincarnation Blues by Michael Poore (August 22)
Imagine falling in love with Death herself, only you call her Suzie. What do you get? Well Milo got 10,000 lives and deaths and reincarnations, each trip from birth to death learning a few more pearls of wisdom about what makes life exciting, and absurd and wonderful and beautiful. Reincarnation Blues is as funny as it is heartwarming.

This is my pick for the best bet in August.
