5 Ways WWE Can Build Excitement At Summerslam

The biggest party of the summer could bring the power of positivity back to the company, but history shows the powers at be won’t do it.

Let’s focus on what we know right now (the last week of June). The Universal Championship will be defended in a Fatal 4-Way. Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman vs. Samoa Joe. Alexa Bliss will defend the Raw Women’s Championship against Bayley. Naomi will defend the Smackdown Women’s Championship against Natalya. John Cena and Shinsuke Nakamura will face off for the #1 Contendership for the WWE Heavyweight Championship. This are the “certainties” we know for now. It’s wrestling, this stuff could change on a dime, we know that. However, I think these 5 ideas could make the WWE Universe more vested in the product put on television week after week.

Brock Lesnar must lose the Universal Championship

Let’s all be honest right now. They did this once before, and a lot of the older generation were not fans of having a part-time champion. Yes, it’s a spectacle every time Brock Lesnar appears on Monday Night Raw. Notice, I didn’t say with the Universal Championship. He doesn’t need it to be a draw. Brock Lesnar is a draw period. So get the belt off him, and put it on someone else. Roman also doesn’t need it. Frankly, Braun doesn’t need it yet either. That leaves Samoa Joe. You can make Brock look strong by having someone else get pinned. You can make Braun look strong by taking him out of the equation by putting him through 4 announce tables (every country will have a team we all know it’s true, it’s damn true). And you can make Roman look strong if every other wrestler hits their finisher, and he passes out to the Coquina Clutch. Lesnar can come and go as he pleases without the belt. Strowman still looks strong. It took 42 finishers to beat Roman. Samoa Joe is the deserving champ and goes into a new rung on the ladder of superstardom.

Carmella cashes in her Money in the Bank contract, and wins

I like Naomi. I think she’s a great in-ring performer; however, she’s not succeeding right now as champion. The whole thing with Lana was not good. Frankly, she hasn’t done anything since. And unless you’re planning on giving Natalya one more nostalgia run, what better way to start Carmella’s tenure as champion than in Brooklyn with a surprise cash-in? And you know how you get that crowd hyped? James Ellsworth comes back for the distraction. That crowd will go bananas. I honestly don’t know how successful Carmella will be as champion, but it would sure shake-up the women’s division on Smackdown Live.

Shinsuke Nakamra beats John Cena, and then beats Jinder Mahal

Jinder Mahal has done a solid job carrying the WWE Championship for the time being. There hasn’t been anything inherently wrong with his matches against Randy Orton, but Jinder simply is not believable as the WWE Champion. The booking has not made him look strong. Sure, people in India view him as a hero, but it’s time to call this experiment a failure. So how do you make Shinsuke the superstar he is? He beats John Cena. I don’t even care if it’s through distraction or interference. Shinsuke beats Cena. Then, he beats Mahal. He overcomes the Singh Brothers. He overcomes Great Khali. Shinsuke is the one to dethrone Jinder, and that starts the reign of Nakamura as the WWE Champion.

Finn Balor must win, and keep his demon under wraps

Every Finn Balor fan needs this.

It looks like we’re going to get Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt at Summerslam. It’s not a complete yawn-fest, but it surely is not what I expected for Finn at this point after he came back. I thought he would be right back in the Universal Championship picture. He’s not. And we’ve only seen the demon in action in one match. It needs to stay that way for now. Bray Wyatt is not the guy to bring the demon back. Finn needs to snap against Bray, go a little ballistic, and show signs of the demon. Then, when he gets back in that Universal Championship picture (against Samoa Joe as I’ve so established in point #1), the demon returns. That incarnation of Finn Balor still means something. So give Finn a big win at Summerslam (although beating Bray Wyatt isn’t much these days) and save the paint… for now.

UK Championship Match

I guarantee I’m reaching on this one, because it will likely happen at NXT: Takeover Brooklyn III. And truly, that is fine and dandy. However, I think that’s selling the potential of superb match for the main card. Tyler Bate and Pete Dunn tore the house down at NXT: Chicago. It was absolutely amazing. However, without that match, the entire NXT show was above average. The NXT specials tend to be fantastic, because the crowds are always hot and the wrestlers just want to put on good wrestling matches. The WWE PPV’s tend to have snooze matches. Even Wrestlemania had matches I simply didn’t care about. Put the UK Championship on the Summerslam card, bring two wrestlers to prominence, and keep the crowd hot.

So there you have it. What do you want to happen at Summerslam in Brooklyn? What do you expect to happen? Let us know in the comments below!
