“There are other worlds than these.”
So says Idris Elba’s Gunslinger in the latest tease for the big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, a magnum opus that spanned 8 books and various short stories over 42 years.
For the uninitiated, The Dark Tower tells the story of Roland Deschain, the last in a line of old-west style knights. Roland is chasing The Man In Black on a quest to reach the Tower, a fabled building holding together Roland’s world, and many others. As the series wears on, the spaces between the various worlds grow very thin, and King’s non-Dark Tower and Dark Tower realities begin to bleed together.
Eagle-eyed viewers have already pointed out subtle references to King’s other works in previously released trailers – an old photo of The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, a broken-down marquee bearing the name of It’s Pennywise The Clown. But now, Sony has released a new teaser showing just how close The Dark Tower and King’s other works are connected. Watch it below.
Intrigued? Surprised? There are certainly a few King works highlighted here (Carrie, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption) that never had an explicit effect on Roland’s journey in the Dark Tower novels. Tell us what you think in the comments below, and get ready for The Dark Tower to hit the big screen on August 4!
