It looks like fall is going to be a heck of a lot more magical for us muggles. It was announced this week that J.K. Rowling will be releasing two brand new Harry Potter books this October!
But muggles, squibs, wizards, and witches, be warned! Technically, these are not a part of the Harry Potter series. Instead, they fall in the same category as Quidditch Through the Ages and the original Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The first book, Harry Potter–a History of Magic, will take readers literally through the history of magic in the world. It is a collaboration between J.K. Rowling and the curators at the British Library. Within the 256 pages, Rowling’s world will be mixed with the muggle world where we see her creations and how they would fit in the real world, throughout history. This newest addition to the Harry Potter universe is considered to be more of an adult book for fans who have grown up reading about The Boy Who Lived.
The second book is called Harry Potter–A Journey Through the History of Magic. This book is a must read for any Potterhead. According the the description released this week, this new book will take “readers on a journey through the Hogwarts curriculum, including Herbology, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy, Divination and more.” It will even let readers “discover the truth behind making the Philosopher’s Stone, create your very own potion and uncover the secret of invisible ink.” This book will be more family friendly, suitable for younger readers just discovering the story of Harry Potter and his friends for the first time.
This isn’t Rowling’s first time returning to the wizarding world she created 20 years ago. The script of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child came out last summer and sold more than 2 million copies in just its first 48 hours. So there’s no doubt that Harry Potter is still a money maker for Rowling and fans will continue to buy books written about the wizarding world whether they focus on the Boy Who Lived, Newt Scamander, a script, or a textbook.
The two newest Harry Potter books are coming to bookshelves around the world on October 20th. Will you be returning to the wizarding world with the rest of us? What are you most excited to learn about Harry Potter’s world? Let us know in the comments below!
