ICYMI: All of the News That Came Out of D23 Expo 2017

D23 Expo 2017 has officially come to an end, and while we will have to wait another two years for the next Expo, this weekend was filled with exciting news and announcements that will help us get through the next two years until D23 Expo 2019. For now, sit back and relax as we go through all of the exciting announcements about the newest Disney/Pixar movies, the Marvel Universe, Star Wars updates, and all of the changes coming to the Disney theme parks in the coming years.

DISNEY LIVE ACTION FILMS

1 . A Wrinkle In Time teaser trailer was released. Cast members Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, newcomer Storm Reid, and director Ava Duvernay shared the teaser trailer and teaser poster with fans. The film is scheduled to be released on March 9, 2018.

2. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was announced as a live action retelling of the classic story of The Nutcracker. The film stars Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, newcomer Mackenzie Foy as Clara, Helen Mirren as Mother Ginger, Morgan Freeman as godfather Drosselmeyer, and even features a special performance by Misty Copeland of the American Ballet Theatre. The film is scheduled for release on November 2, 2018.

3. Mary Poppins Returns was presented by Emily Blunt, herself, with a new video clip of the practically perfect nanny. The film is an original sequel to the Julie Andrews classic and is coming to theaters Christmas Day 2018.

4. The official cast of Aladdin was revealed. The film will star Will Smith as The Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin, and Naomi Scott as Jasmine. There is still no release date for this film.

5. We got our first look at the live action remake of Dumbo. Tim Burton greeted Guests from across the pond as he talked about his latest work which stars Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, and Michael Keaton. Dumbo will be released on March 29, 2019.

6. The cast and crew of The Last Jedi showed the audience a sneak peek look at the newest Star Wars film. The movie stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro. The film opens on December 15, 2017.

7. The cast of The Avengers: Infinity War appeared on stage to announce the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the Marvel Universe. Stars like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Mackie, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Josh Brolin, Don Cheadle, Sebastian Stan, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff were present for the sneak peek presentation. Infinity War opens in theaters May 4, 2018.

DISNEY PARKS

1 . The official name for the new Star Wars themed lands coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World was revealed as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. We got exciting updates along with a promise from the Chairman of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, that Galaxy’s Edge will be open in Disneyland before the next D23 Expo. That means by Spring 2019 Galaxy’s Edge will be open in California with the Florida park opening later that year.

2. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be replacing The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This will be the first time ever that Mickey has his own attraction at a Disney Park and Guests will be entering into the movie screen and living one of his shorts. The Great Movie Ride will be closing for good in August 2017.

3. Two brand new attractions starring Ratatouille and the Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to Epcot in time for the Magic Kingdom’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2021. Ratatouille’s ride will be coming to the France pavilion in World Showcase and the Guardians of the Galaxy will be replacing Ellen’s Energy Adventure in the Universe of Energy pavilion.

4. A brand new space themed restaurant is coming to Epcot and will be adjacent to one of Disney’s most intense rides, Mission: SPACE. Speaking of Mission: SPACE, a new green mission will be available soon at the attraction.

5. A Tron roller coaster is confirmed for Tomorrowland at The Magic Kingdom. Back in April, we reported a rumor that said the TRON Lightcycle Power Run roller coaster from Shanghai Disneyland was supposedly coming to replace the Tomorrowland Speedway. It’s due to be open for the 50th anniversary of The Magic Kingdom and will be located next to Space Mountain.

6. Disney’s Hotel New York, The Art of Marvel is headed to Disneyland Paris. A reimagining of Disney’s Hotel New York, Guests will find themselves right in the action packed excitement of the Marvel Universe.

7. A Star Wars themed resort is confirmeded for Walt Disney World. Back in April, we reported a rumor that an all immersive Star Wars themed resort was headed to Walt Disney World and that rumor was confirmed on Saturday. There is still no word on when this resort will open… possibly for the 2021 festivities.

8. Toy Story Land is officially scheduled to open next summer. This highly anticipated land, based off of the one in Hong Kong Disneyland, which is now coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, is slated to open summer 2018.

9. A superhero universe is coming to Disney California Adventure park. With the huge success of Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! it looks like a few more heroes will be arriving in Disneyland with the likes of Spider-Man and the Avengers coming to the newest superhero themed area at Disneyland.

DISNEY ANIMATED FEATURES

1 . The cast and crew of Coco took the stage to perform an original song from the upcoming film. Coco tells the story of Miguel who is an aspiring musician in a family that has banned music. When he finds himself in the World of the Dead, he goes on a journey to find the truth behind his family. Coco hits theaters November 22, 2017.

2. Fans finally got their first look at Incredibles 2 when the cast and crew took the stage. The voices of Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, Violet, Dash, and Frozone were all present at the panel. Incredibles 2 hits theaters June 15, 2018.

3. Emmy®-winning actress and comedian Sarah Silverman took the stage to present Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. The audience was the first to see a clip that features all of the Disney Princesses. Auli‘i Cravalho (Moana), Kristen Bell (Anna in Frozen), Kelly MacDonald (Merida in Brave), Mandy Moore (Rapunzel in Tangled), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana in The Princess and the Frog), Irene Bedard (Pocahontas), Linda Larkin (Jasmine in Aladdin), Paige O’Hara (Belle in Beauty and the Beast) and Jodi Benson (Ariel in The Little Mermaid) all joined Silverman on stage. Wreck it Ralph 2 arrives in theaters November 21, 2018.

4. Whether we want it or not, Toy Story 4 is definitely a thing. We didn’t get any trailers or behind the scenes looks but we do have a confirmed opening date of June 21, 2019.

5. Kristen Bell (Anna) and Josh Gad (Olaf) presented the sequel to Frozen, the new film still untitled. Idina Menzel will be reprising her role as Elsa and Jonathon Groff will reappear as Kristoff. Frozen 2 is set to hit theaters November 27, 2019.

6. Dan Scanlon (director of Monsters University), presented a currently untitled fantasy film from Pixar Animation Studios that transports the audience to a “suburban fantasy world.” Based heavily on his own childhood, the story follows two elves that are able to spend a magical day with their father who died years before. No release date is announced just yet.
