Disney is on a new craze in recent years with their obsession with taking their classic animated features and turning them into live action remakes for the 21st century.
Some have been great like Beauty and the Beast and some definitely fell flat like Maleficent… But whether you like these new remakes or not, there are almost 20 new films in the queue and the next one that seems to be getting the most action is the 76 year old Dumbo.
Directed by Tim Burton, this film already has some pretty impressive names signed on to bring the slightly terrifying story of Dumbo–an elephant born with over sized ears who learns to fly–to life:
Eva Green (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) will play Colette.
Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) will be playing the character of Holt.
Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will portray the character of Medici, the ringmaster of the circus.
And on June 26th, Michael Keaton confirmed on Good Morning, America, that he will be joining the cast to play the role of Vandemere, seemingly the main villain of the story. Check out the announcement here (pro-tip: skip to 4:50… unless you want to hear Keaton talk about Spider-Man, that is…):
This is not the first time Keaton has worked with Burton, having combined their talents in films such as Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), and Batman Returns (1992). Keaton is also no stranger to the Disney Company having voiced several Pixar characters such as Chick Hicks in Cars (2006) and even Ken from Toy Story 3 (2010).
Many of these actors have already appeared in Tim Burton films–Eva Green as Miss Peregrine and Danny DeVito as the Penguin–so we all know it’s only a matter of time until Helena Bonham Carter joins the cast as well.
There’s still no release date for this film, so in the meantime, we’ll have to pop in our old VHS copies of Dumbo and try to not panic when “Pink Elephants on Parade” starts to play.
What do you think? Is Michael Keaton the guy to play this role? What are your thoughts on a Dumbo live action film? Leave a comment below.
