How Wonder Woman Compares To Other Superhero Movie Opening Weekends

Wonder Woman has opened to high praise from critics, but just how well has it done at the box office?

According to boxofficemojo.com, Wonder Woman had a highly successful weekend worldwide, raking in $103,251,471. It is the largest opening ever for a movie directed by a female, shattering last year’s Fifty Shades of Grey (thank the maker!). This is most welcomed news for geeks everywhere, as a sequel is already in discussion with Director Patty Jenkins slated to return at the helm.

Most Superhero origin movies don’t sell as well as their respective sequels, but Wonder Woman is in rare company with its debut. In fact, in relation to other origin films, only 3 have outperformed DC’s leading lady – 2016’s mega popular Deadpool, fellow DC juggernaut Man of Steel (2013), and the original Spider-man (2002).

That’s damn impressive.

More Wonder Woman tees than you can wrap a golden lasso around

In terms of other Superhero films, Wonder Woman has outperformed Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, & Captain America: The Winter Soldier, just to name a few. Comic book fans everywhere will rejoice, but I get the feeling that DC fanboys and gals will enjoy this just a little more.

The Geekiverse loved this fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe. In our review, we cited that “Wonder Woman feels like a savior in our world just as its titular heroine does in hers.”
