Godzilla vs. Kong Names Its Director

We’re still a long way out from the epic clash between cinema’s most iconic monsters, but Godzilla vs. Kong now has a director attached to it. Adam Wingard has been confirmed to be taking the helm on the upcoming blockbuster, which is scheduled to release on May 22nd, 2020.

Wingard has done much of his work in the horror genre, directing lower-budget hits like You’re Next and The Guest. Last year, he directed the 2016 reboot of Blair Witch , and he recently finished directing Netflix’s live action film adaption of the Death Note manga.

Wingard’s hire continues a trend of Legendary Entertainment‘s MonsterVerse being a launching pad for lesser-know, up-and-coming directors. Gareth Edwards and Jordan Vogt-Roberts made their big budget debuts with 2014’s Godzilla, and this year’s Kong: Skull Island, respectively, while Godzilla: King of the Monsters is in the hands of Michael Dougherty, who, like, Wingard, previously worked on horror flicks, such as Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set to bridge the gap between Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong. The direct sequel to 2014’s Godzilla will bring some famous monsters to join the Big G, including Mothra, Rodan, and the King of Terror, himself, King Ghidorah. Kyle Chandler (Super 8, The Wolf of Wall Street), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2), and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) have been cast for the film, which is scheduled for release on March 22, 2019.

The Godzilla Collection, Volumes 1 and 2

Details on the gargantuan encounter between Godzilla and Kong are still scarce, but the MonsterVerse seems to be moving along smoothly. Back in March, Legendary assembled its writer’s room to develop the story for Godzilla vs. Kong, not so different from how the Marvel Cinematic Universe and recent Star Wars films have done. Some of Godzilla vs. Kong’s team consists of screen writers behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as well as some who helped write Star Trek: Beyond, and The Maze Runner.
