New Dark Crystal Show Coming to Netflix

Return to an age of wonder!

Dark Crystal fans, it is time to rejoice because it looks like we are returning to our favorite land filled with Gelflings, Skesis, Mystics, and, of course, Fizzgig.

If you’ve never heard of any of these words, then you’ve probably never been exposed to the brilliance of Jim Henson’s 1980s classic fantasy film The Dark Crystal.

The original film premiered in 1982 and tells the tale of Jen, a Gelfling, whose mission is to return a shard of the Dark Crystal and return balance to his world. A pretty simple plot but the film was anything but elementary. Not a single human being appears in the film and the technology, puppetry, and animatronics used were considered groundbreaking at the time (many designs still in use today). While the film received mixed reviews when it premiered, it has since received a cult following similar to that of Jim Henson’s other fantasy film, Labyrinth.

Despite the fact that the film was released 35 years ago now, it still manages to have a somewhat active role in pop culture (even if it’s only among fans of Henson and fantasy films). There are been several novels written based on the film, multiple board games, video games, a Marvel comic book retelling the story of the film, and even an American manga have all appeared over the last 35 years.

In 2006, whispers began of a sequel that Jim Henson had had in mind for the film entitled The Power of the Dark Crystal. Work began on the script in January of 2006 but it seemed as if the story of The Power of the Dark Crystal would never be told. After writers quitting and new ones signing on, director’s names being mentioned and then scrapped, rumored release dates, and then hiatus after hiatus, it was confirmed in 2016 (yes, ten years of waiting… I’m not bitter) that the film was never going to happen. However, not all hope was lost. Instead of a feature film of The Power of the Dark Crystal, the Jim Henson Company announced that the story would be told in a twelve part comic book series from Archaia Comics and BOOM! Studios to be released throughout 2017.

Fans of The Dark Crystal had resigned themselves to the fact that we would never get to see the world of the Dark Crystal again… at least not how we first experienced it. But all that changed on May 18th when a little teaser trailer appeared on the internet from Netflix. At first, it appears as a behind the scenes look at The Dark Crystal but, by the end, you realize that you just watched a trailer for an entirely new Dark Crystal tale.

Entitled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resitance, the 10 episode series is not the sequel that we’ve been waiting on for over ten years now, but rather, a prequel. Netflix’s description of the new series reads: “When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will begin filming in the UK this fall.
