Geek Visits: Free Comic Book Day 2016 Edition

Free Comic Books? Isn’t that a glorious sentence?

The Geekiverse partakes in Free Comic Book Day each year by sending out our merry band of Geeks to various stores around our home town of Buffalo, NY. If you aren’t familiar, Free Comic Book Day comes around each May. Many participating retailers are able to offer certain comic books at no cost to customers that make a purchase.

Last year, I was out of town (and nowhere near a comic store, GASP!). Jamie was able to snag me a copy of the (then) upcoming Secret Wars series from Marvel. This year, my wife Lauren, Jamie, and I took a trip to a local shop that has been here for more than a decade: The Card Store. When I was 10 years old, my Dad took me weekly to The Card Store to get a pack of hockey cards with my allowance. Over time, the shop has transformed into a full fledged comic store, featuring (you guessed it) Comic Books, trading cards, and action figures.

In need of a classic comic? No problem. Collect a weekly/monthly series? This is one of Western NY’s finest.

Now, I visit every few months to pick up the latest books from my multiple on-going Star Wars series from Marvel. The comic I picked up today was the beginning of Marvel’s Civil War II (see a Grumpy Geek’s rant right here). Jamie received a Suicide Squad comic.

In addition, I brought home loads of Star Wars comics from series such as the title series Star Wars, Darth Vader, Kanan: The Last Padawan, and newer, highly anticipated series such as Poe Dameron & Obi-Wan & Anakin. I think I’ll be set for a little bit now!

Free Comic Book Day is an exciting day for fans of anything Geek. I hope you were able to participate and not only go visit your local shop, but also purchase a comic or two from one of these hard working shop owners. We are blessed in Western NY with lots of options, including Queen City Comics on Main Street. If you can help it, don’t order online or through Amazon – go support your local comic book store owner!

Where did you go for Free Comic Book Day? What did you get for free? Did you purchase anything? Send us your pictures and comments.
