Entertainment Weekly reported this morning that Netflix has ordered a stand alone season of The Punisher as part of it’s burgeoning relationship with Marvel Television. This confirms rumors and piles of fan speculation that arose after the great success of the character in season 2 of Daredevil, which was released in March.
The success of the Punisher character this time around is 100% because if actor Jon Bernthal, whose casting I rank up there with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Robert Downey Jr. As Tony Stark. It is unfortunate the Bernthal won’t get to appear as the Punisher in Civil War, as Frank Castle figured prominently in the comic arc. The Punisher has been played in the past by Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane, and Ray Stevenson, and has been voiced in a direct to video anime by The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus.
The Punisher series, which has no confirmed release date, is the 6th show in the partnership between Netflix and Marvel, who are enjoying great success in their Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of superheroes, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, set to release in September, and Iron Fist, which are all leading up to a Defenders team up.
The Punisher series will be helmed by Steve Lightfoot, recently of the TV show Hannibal. No details are available about whether Frank Castle will appear in other Netflix/Marvel series, including the Defenders.
