WWE Royal Rumble Reaction

For the first time ever, the WWE World Heavyweight Title changed hands in the Royal Rumble Match, and the Geekiverse simply doesn’t get it.

IC Title
WWE Intercontinental Title Match: Last Man Standing
Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens

Wow. I mean what else can you say? These two have such great ring chemistry, it’s insane. Let’s start with the cannonball through the barricade. Are you kidding me? THAT WAS MINUTES INTO THE MATCH. Fight Owens Fight then decides, let’s make this a chair party. OKAY? Don’t threaten me with a good time. These two were so willing to put everything on the line, and it showed through their performance. Absolutely loved the match from beginning to end. Been a while since we could say that about ANY wrestling match.

In the end, Ambrose would retain his title after he pushed Kevin Owens through a two table stack, and KO could not answer the ten count. Stellar way to kick-off the PPV. If only the momentum could have stayed. Foreshadowing much? Don’t hate me. I didn’t write this stuff. Well I wrote this, but not the WWE creative… nevermind.

Tag Team Titles

WWE Tag Team Championship Match
The New Day vs. The Usos

I straight up love The New Day. They’re 3 guys I just want to hang out with, and talk with. About anything! Chris Jericho broke Francesca the Trombone. So what happens at the Royal Rumble? Francesca 2.0. That’s right, Xavier Woods has another trombone in his life, and he couldn’t be happier.

Wrestling wise the match was solid. I can’t complain. There wasn’t any overall sloppy moments, but I wasn’t blown away either. The Usos pulled off some high spots, Xavier pulled some shenanigans to keep his team in the match, and Big E was a beast. The New Day retains, and the crowd couldn’t be more excited. Perhaps that was the shock of this match. The New Day was cheered, and the Usos were boo’ed. Interesting.

US Title

WWE U.S. Championship Match
Alberto Del Rio vs. Kalisto

Kalisto is the new Rey Mysterio. It’s quite obvious, and at one point the announcers even made the connection. I’m taking a page out of the Grumpy Geek here to complain about Alberto Del Rio’s move-set. How is it, that his super kick can win him the U.S. Championship against John Cena, but can’t beat a superstar like Kalisto? The two are not comparable! Okay, rant over. Back to the match.

The crowd died a bit when Kalisto missed a spot with a pin-attempt, but was overly excited to scream Lucha! when he won the title again. Hopefully, this is not another time in which he loses the match within a day like he did a few weeks ago. At the same time, this could be another way to keep the crowd on their toes. They never know who is going to win the title because they continue to trade it back and forth? Who knows, but I approve of Kalisto getting a shot with the big guys, AND WINNING.

Becky Charlotte

WWE Divas Title Match
Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

Ric Flair kissed Becky Lynch? Sasha Banks returned? Does Austin get to see Sasha vs. Charlotte at Fastlane? YES! YES! YES!

Very solid match all around. Ric Flair proved he was the kiss-stealing son of a gun. Becky proved to be the underdog for a reason. Charlotte kicked her father unintentionally. Good portential side story… AND SASHA BANKS RETURNED. Charlotte looked ticked off once the match ended, yet all was calm while she held the title. I expect that to be a theme moving forward. What happens if and when she loses the title? Does she take it out on her father? Sasha Banks is coming hard, and she is not as gullible, or warm as Becky. Can’t wait to see where this goes from here.

The 30-man Royal Rumble Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Where to begin. Let’s be honest: we all expected Roman Reigns to retain his title. They’ve done everything possible to make him THE guy on this roster. So when Vince McMahon not only said his title would be up for grabs, but that he would come out number 1? Reigns had to win right? He had to show that he was the best on this roster, and do it through impossible odds. And you couldn’t even do that right WWE.

Anyway, AJ Styles debuted. WHAT?! AJ STYLES IS NOW IN WWE?! It’s one thing to read a rumor. It’s another thing entirely to see it happen. Welcome to the WWE Mr. Styles. I shall geek out ecstatically about your presence in my world. His entrance alone nearly took up the 90 seconds before the next entrant. WORTH IT. More on that in a moment.

As a whole, I am thoroughly pleased with how the Royal Rumble panned out. Great debut? Check. Great returns? Check. Storylines from the match itself? Check. A new champion? Check. However, what in the world did they do to Roman Reigns? Their whole mantra is to make him look like the toughest dude. He sat out most of the match because the League of Nations put him on a stretcher. That worked 15+ years ago with Stone Cold Steve Austin. It doesn’t work in today’s WWE. The WWE failed to make Roman Reigns look strong. I would have appreciated a massive performance where he eliminated half the field. This was a weak attempt to protect his aura as the golden child.

For every 42 negatives, there has to be a positive right? Sami Zayn returned! He eliminated his biggest rival Kevin Owens! Thank you for that. Hoping for a big Wrestlemania payoff. Before that, Kevin Owens eliminated AJ Styles. Are you kidding me? That idea alone is making me sweat with excitement. The Wyatt’s eliminated Brock Lesnar. Paul Heyman and Bray Wyatt going toe to toe on the microphone is a pipe-bomb-fest. Yes. I made that word up. Triple H returns at 30, and eliminates Roman Reigns… and it wasn’t the last elimination?! Smart WWE. Smart. I’m with you. And then, I wasn’t.

Listen, you had the chance to MAKE Dean Ambrose. The dude is a star already. Ambrose Owens TORE THE HOUSE DOWN. Yes, he’s already the Intercontinental champion. Why not make him a dual champion and create that intrigue? Another anti-authority figure running around with the title? AND he’s a dual champion? AND HIS BROTHER, ROMAN REIGNS, IS NOW THE FORMER CHAMPION? How many storylines must I spoon feed you WWE? And you make Triple H the 14-time champion… to…uh… make Roman Reigns mad?

I don’t get it WWE. You make Triple H the champion, and have him likely main-event Wrestlemania 32, depsite the massive need to push new stars. Kevin Owens. Dean Ambrose. Sami Zayn. AJ Styles. Bray Wyatt. You have all these new stars who are begging for the spotlight, and you give it to the guy we’ve seen countless times main-event the biggest show of the year. Here’s to hoping this is not the end all be all for Wrestlemania plans.

That being said, this WWE fan is headed to Fastlane in Cleveland, Ohio. So stay with the Geekiverse on the road to Wrestlemania. We’re tracking everything as it happens, and we will bring you some crazy videos and photos from the event as it happens.
